Ospreys take showers to clean their feathers. Instead of splashing around in water, Ospreys will often take what is known as a shower to clean their feathers. This involves standing in shallow water or on a branch overhanging the water and flapping their wings vigorously, causing droplets of water to spray over their bodies. Showering helps ospreys maintain their feathers: Ospreys need to keep their feathers in good condition in order to maintain their ability to fly and catch fish. Showering helps to remove dirt and debris from their feathers, as well as any parasites that may be present.
Ospreys may also bathe in rain. When it rains, Ospreys will sometimes fly up into the air and turn their wings, allowing the rain to wash over their bodies. This is another way that they keep their feathers clean and in good condition.
