Ospreys are known for building large, conspicuous nests on top of trees, poles, and other elevated structures near bodies of water. Osprey nests are among the largest of all bird nests, often measuring up to 2 meters across and weighing in excess of 50 kilograms.
Ospreys prefer to build their nests near water, where they can easily find food and where their young will be safe from predators. They will often choose tall trees or other structures that provide a good vantage point for hunting and watching over their nest.
Osprey nests can be used for many years: Ospreys will often return to the same nest year after year, adding new materials and making repairs as needed. Some nests can be used for decades, growing larger and more elaborate with each new breeding season.
